The file is already here. A screen recording you saved as mp4. A folder of png frames from a render. A short clip from a tool you already use. Gif converter is the job of loading that source into an editor on this Windows machine and writing a gif next to it. It is not a capture of a live window. Capture sits on Make a gif. It is not a shrink of a gif you already exported. That sits on Gif resizer.

This is ScreenToGif. Windows. Ms-PL. NickeManarin publishes it. We did not make it. Official files live on GitHub Releases. The repo is NickeManarin/ScreenToGif. This site does not host the installer. Skip Softonic, CNET, and unofficial sites that wrap the name.

The button on this page goes to Install on the home page. Home is the open source gif maker page. Releases on home is the live file list. The winget box is on that same page.

Install so gif converter actually runs

Paste this into Windows Terminal or Command Prompt:

winget install -e --id NickeManarin.ScreenToGif
Copy

If winget is missing, install App Installer from Microsoft, then paste the command again. Official Microsoft links only. The package id is NickeManarin.ScreenToGif. Do not paste a lookalike id from a comment thread. Winget is the tidy fetch because Package Manager talks to the same publisher the GitHub account uses.

The other Windows path is GitHub Releases. Open the latest release. For most PCs, take ScreenToGif Setup x64 (.msi). There is also a portable .zip if you do not want an installer. Light assets sit on the same page. Pick one. More install detail sits on Open Source GIF Maker Windows. If you care how the file was fetched, GIF Maker Download Safe is the trust page. If winget itself is the missing piece, How to Install Winget is the Microsoft path.

How to use a gif converter on the desktop

  1. Install ScreenToGif with the command on this page, or open the latest GitHub release and pick the Windows installer for your machine.
  2. Open the app on this Windows machine. You want the editor, not a fresh screen recording, unless you meant to capture. This job starts from a file you already have.
  3. Load the video or the image sequence. In ScreenToGif that is Media. The shortcut they document is Ctrl+Shift+O. It opens a file picker. Pick the mp4, webm, or the images that already sit on disk. Insert adds frames into a project you already have open. New starts a project from that file and discards the previous animation. Pick the one that matches whether you are starting clean.
  4. Trim or delete frames you do not need. The frame list at the bottom is the timeline. Skip the lead-in, skip the tail, skip the mistake in the middle. A gif does not need the whole video. Keep the seconds that carry the motion.
  5. Save As a gif into a folder you control. Open the result once. If it is huge, drop width on Gif resizer after, or cut more frames here and save again.

That list is the whole converter path. You are not uploading the file. You are not pasting a link. The source never has to leave this PC.

Video you already have

A video is a stream of frames with a clock. A gif is a loop of frames with delays. Gif converter is the translation. Load the clip. Let the editor explode it into frames you can see. Then cut. A thirty second demo is almost always too long for a gif that someone will watch in a chat. Two to five seconds of the actual motion is the useful part. Delete the rest before you save.

Frame rate from the source is not a promise about the gif. A 60 fps recording will make a heavy gif if you keep every frame. You can delete every other frame, or raise the delay on the ones you keep, so the motion still reads and the file is not a brick. The delay control lives on the frames, not on a website slider. Set it, play the preview, then save.

If the video is 4K and the gif only needs to show a button, crop first or resize after load so you are not encoding a billboard. Crop is a different control from Resize. Crop throws away the edges. Resize keeps the whole frame and changes the pixel count. For a converter job, crop the region that matters, then save. If the gif you get is still too wide, that is the resizer page.

Image sequence you already have

An image sequence is already frames. Png, jpg, or a mix in a folder, named in order. Gif converter here means load those images as one animation, check the order, set a delay, and save as a gif. You do not need to stitch them in a second program first. Media will take images. If the order is wrong, the frame list lets you move them. If one frame is a stray still from the render, delete it.

Delay is the thing people forget on a sequence. A render dumped at twelve frames with no timing looks like a flicker if you leave the default delay too short, and like a slideshow if you leave it too long. Pick one delay for the whole set, play it, then tweak the hold on the last frame if you want the loop to rest. That last-frame hold is how a gif can pause on the finished state before it repeats.

If the sequence is hundreds of frames, you will feel it. The editor has to load them. Disk and RAM on this machine are the limit, not a plan on a website. That is the point of converting here. A long sequence that is really a video should probably have been a video. Use the gif for the short loop. Keep the long take as the original file.

What this gif converter will not do

It will not pull a clip from a website for you. The source has to be a file on this PC. If you only have a tab, download or export the media first with whatever tool you already trust, then load that file. We do not add a URL box. We do not run a second product that fetches other people’s video.

It will not record the screen. If you do not have a file yet and you want the gif to come from a live window, that is Make a gif. Start the recorder, finish, then save. You can still trim in the same editor. The difference is the start: a capture versus a file you already hold.

It will not replace Ezgif’s website converter. Official Ezgif can sit first for people who want a tab. GIF maker vs Ezgif is the comparison. This page stays on the Windows editor and a file that already lives here.

Save, preview, and a second pass

Save As is the export. GIF is the type for this job. The editor can write other types. Stay on gif if that is what you came to make. Pick a folder you control. Do not save over the source video. Keep the original. The gif is a copy with a different job.

Play the preview before you close the project. Watch it twice. The first pass catches a frame you meant to delete. The second pass catches a delay that feels rushed. If the loop seams badly, the first and last frames do not match. Delete a few frames at the end, or add a hold, and save again.

Color is a gif limit, not a ScreenToGif quirk. A gradient-heavy video will band. A UI with flat colors will look fine. If the source is a photo-like clip, expect the palette to show. That is the format. Lowering width helps more than raising a quality slider you hope will invent extra colors.

How do I use a gif converter?

Install with the command on this page, or pick the Windows file from GitHub Releases. Open ScreenToGif. Load the video or image sequence you already have with Media. Trim the frames you do not need. Save As a gif. This site does not host the installer. Files stay on GitHub.

What is the winget command for a gif converter?

Paste winget install -e --id NickeManarin.ScreenToGif from the box on this page. That is the live command. The zip or msi path is GitHub Releases if you want the file in a folder you pick.

Can a gif converter load a video I already have?

Yes. That is the job. The file has to be on this PC. Open Media, pick the video, wait for frames, trim, save as a gif. We do not convert from a pasted website link.

Can a gif converter load an image sequence?

Yes. Pick the images with Media, check the order in the frame list, set a delay, and save as a gif. One folder of frames is enough. You do not need a second stitcher first.

Did you make this gif converter?

No. This site only points at GitHub. NickeManarin publishes ScreenToGif under Ms-PL. Official files live on GitHub Releases. Skip Softonic, CNET, and unofficial wrappers.
