The gif exists. It is too wide for the place you want to put it, or it eats a whole ticket pane, or it was captured at screen size when a 480 pixel loop would have done. Gif resizer is that change of dimensions, on this Windows machine, without sending the file through a website. If you do not have a gif yet, record one on Make a gif. If you have a video, convert it on Gif converter, then come back here if the result is still too large.
This is ScreenToGif. Windows. Ms-PL. NickeManarin publishes it. We did not make it. Official files live on GitHub Releases. The repo is NickeManarin/ScreenToGif. This site does not host the installer. Skip Softonic, CNET, and unofficial sites that wrap the name.
The button on this page goes to Install on the home page. Home stays Open Source GIF Maker. Releases on home is the live file list. This page is only width, height, and a save.
Install so gif resizer actually runs
Paste this into Windows Terminal or Command Prompt:
winget install -e --id NickeManarin.ScreenToGifCopy
If winget is missing, install App Installer from Microsoft, then paste the command again. Official Microsoft links only. The package id is NickeManarin.ScreenToGif. Do not paste a lookalike id from a comment thread.
The other Windows path is GitHub Releases. Open the latest release. For most PCs, take ScreenToGif Setup x64 (.msi). There is also a portable .zip if you do not want an installer. More install detail sits on Open Source GIF Maker Windows. Fetch and trust sit on GIF Maker Download Safe. If winget is the missing piece, How to Install Winget is the Microsoft path.
How to resize a gif on the desktop
- Install ScreenToGif with the command on this page, or open the latest GitHub release and pick the Windows installer for your machine.
- Open the app on this Windows machine. You want the editor. You are not starting a new screen recording unless you meant to capture a smaller region from scratch.
- Load the gif you already have. Media (Ctrl+Shift+O) opens a file picker. Pick the gif. Wait until the frame list fills. If the project already has other frames, use Insert or start New so you do not mix two animations.
- Open Resize. On the Image tab that control is Resize. The shortcut they document is Alt+R. The panel opens on the side. Width and height are the numbers that matter for this job.
- Set width and height, then Apply. Resize applies to all frames, not only the one you have selected. That is what you want for a gif. A single frame at a new size would break the loop. Keep the aspect unless you meant to squash it. Apply once. Play the preview.
- Save As a gif into a folder you control. Do not overwrite the original until you have looked at the new file. Keep the source gif in case you want a different width later.
That list is the whole resizer path. The file never has to leave this PC.
Width, height, and what Apply does
Width is how many pixels across each frame will be. Height is how many pixels down. For a UI gif, 480 or 640 wide is a common target because chat and docs scale from there. For a tiny icon loop, smaller is fine. Type the width, let height follow if the panel keeps aspect, then Apply. If you type both and they do not match the original ratio, the gif will stretch. Stretch is rarely what you wanted. Undo and try again with aspect locked.
DPI and quality sit in that same Resize panel. DPI is for how the image is tagged, not a magic sharpness boost. Quality is a trade on how the pixels are resampled. Apply commits the new size to every frame in the project. After Apply, the old pixel grid is gone from this project. That is why you keep the original file on disk. A second pass to a still smaller width is fine. A pass to a much larger width will not invent detail. Upscaling a gif makes a bigger, softer gif. Prefer recording or converting at the size you need if you still have the source video or can capture again.
Crop is next to Resize on the Image tab (Alt+C). Crop cuts edges. It does not scale. If the gif is wide because the recorder caught a sidebar you do not need, crop first, then resize. If the gif is wide because the whole frame matters, skip crop and only resize. Flip and rotate are a different panel. They are not a resizer. Do not flip a gif because you meant to shrink it.
Smaller for chat, tickets, and docs
People look for a gif resizer when a host refused the file, or when the preview is a strip that shoves the reply box off the screen. Width is the lever that actually helps. Deleting a few frames helps too, but that is trimming, not resizing. Do the dimension change first. If the file is still heavy, delete frames that do not carry motion, then save again. Delay changes can shorten perceived time without shrinking pixels. Use delay for pacing. Use Resize for size.
A website resizer uploads the gif, runs the job on their side, and lets you download. Official Ezgif can sit first for people who want that tab. Their official about page lists an animated image resizer among their popular tools. GIF maker vs Ezgif is the comparison. This page stays on ScreenToGif, on this PC, on a gif you already hold. We do not clone their site. We do not invent an upload cap for them.
If the gif shows a private window, do not pick the tab. Load it here. Resize here. Save here. That is the privacy row of the vs, applied to this one job.
When you should recapture instead
Resize cannot fix a take that included half the desktop. If the useful motion is a 200 pixel control inside a 1920 pixel frame, crop to that control, then resize if you still need a specific width. If crop leaves you with a muddy scale, go back to the app and make a gif again with a tighter recorder rectangle. A clean small capture beats a giant capture you shrink in panic.
Same for fps. A 15 fps full-size gif that you then shrink is still 15 frames per second of work. If the loop is a single toggle, you may not need that many frames. Resize does not drop fps. Delete frames or re-record at a lower capture speed if the file is heavy after the width change.
If you still have the original video, converting at a smaller width can be cleaner than converting full size and then resizing the gif. That choice lives on Gif converter: load the video, resize in the editor, then save once. Two exports stack generation loss. One export at the size you need is the calmer path.
Save a new file
Save As. New name. The original gif is the backup. Play the new file in whatever viewer you will actually send from. Some viewers scale again. If the gif looks fine in the editor and blocky in the chat, the chat is scaling it. Pick a width close to how it will display so you are not shrinking twice.
Palette limits still apply. A resized gif does not gain colors. It may look slightly softer. That is resampling, not a broken install. If text in the gif becomes unreadable at the new width, the width is too small for that text. Go up a step, or recapture with larger type on screen.
One project. One Apply. One save. If you opened two copies of ScreenToGif and resized in both, you will not know which folder got the file. Close the extra window. Work in the copy you installed with winget, or the portable folder you unpacked on purpose.
How do I resize a gif?
Install with the command on this page, or pick the Windows file from GitHub Releases. Open ScreenToGif. Load the gif you already have. Open Resize on the Image tab, set width and height, Apply, then Save As a gif. This site does not host the installer. Files stay on GitHub.
What is the winget command for a gif resizer?
Paste winget install -e --id NickeManarin.ScreenToGif from the box on this page. That is the live command. GitHub Releases is the other path if you want the Setup x64 msi or the portable zip.
Does gif resizer change every frame?
Yes. Resize in ScreenToGif applies to all frames. That keeps the loop aligned. If you only meant to cut the edges, use Crop instead, then save.
Should I enlarge a gif with a gif resizer?
You can set a larger width. It will not add real detail. Prefer a new capture or a convert from the original video if you still have a sharper source. Shrinking is the usual job.
Did you make this gif resizer?
No. This site only points at GitHub. NickeManarin publishes ScreenToGif under Ms-PL. Official files live on GitHub Releases. Skip Softonic, CNET, and unofficial wrappers.
