When this gif maker needs FFmpeg

ScreenToGif can save a gif or an apng without FFmpeg. Video is the path that needs it. README names gif, apng, video, psd, and png. Wiki export notes describe a basic system AVI encoder and an FFmpeg encoder for more formats such as MP4 and WebM. Current release notes mention exporting and importing videos with FFmpeg 7 and newer. Use that line. Do not pin a ScreenToGif tag in public copy.

Install the gif maker first:

winget install -e --id NickeManarin.ScreenToGif

Get ffmpeg.exe from a recognized build

The ScreenToGif wiki page for video export is marked outdated on old download host names. Do not follow a stale host. Take a current official FFmpeg Windows build and keep ffmpeg.exe in a folder you control. Some current ScreenToGif builds also offer a download control under Options, Extras. If that download finishes, you still want the app pointing at a real ffmpeg.exe. If it fails, select the file by hand.

Skip Softonic-style FFmpeg wrappers the same way you skip gif-maker wrappers. Safety for the app itself: is this gif maker safe and download safely.

Target FFmpeg 7 and newer to match current ScreenToGif notes. Mixing a very old ffmpeg.exe with a current gif maker is a common export failure.

Point ScreenToGif at the exe

Open Options, then Extras. Select the ffmpeg.exe you placed. That is the documented extras path: the app shells out to FFmpeg during encode. Wiki video notes pass FFmpeg command text for MP4 and WebM. If you lose those settings, the wiki shows defaults that pad to even width and height. Tweak only if you already read FFmpeg documentation. Daily users can leave the defaults.

Gif export can also use an FFmpeg encoder as one of several gif encoders. You do not need that for a first gif. Use it when you want that encoder’s quality tradeoff. Gifski is a separate optional encoder some builds mention. Do not invent a requirement. FFmpeg is the one video path these notes map.

Import a video, including a phone clip

Copy the file to the Windows PC. Open it after FFmpeg is configured. That is how a phone screen recording becomes frames you can edit. There is no Android ScreenToGif installer in the README. There is no Mac package either. Kap is a macOS recorder, not this path.

Browser encoders remain a separate job: switch from browser gif tools, vs EZGIF, move off web encoders. If EZGIF already made a gif, download that gif. Do not invent an EZGIF project import.

Runtime, architecture, and extra copies

The gif maker still needs .NET 9 Desktop Runtime or above. FFmpeg does not replace that runtime. Match x64, x86, or Arm64 across ScreenToGif, the desktop runtime, and ffmpeg.exe when you can. An x64 gif maker with an Arm64 FFmpeg build is a failed export.

Winget wraps the full setup MSI: how to install winget. Portable zip: portable or setup. Light versus full: light or full. Releases: gif maker releases. GitHub: open source gif maker on GitHub. Windows: open source gif maker on Windows. App Installer: Microsoft App Installer.

Keep one ScreenToGif copy. Store listing 9N3SQK8PDS8G is supporting. Chocolatey package screentogif is supporting. Do not stack three installs that each point at different FFmpeg paths.

After FFmpeg works

Record a short screen or webcam clip. Export gif without FFmpeg to prove capture. Export video with FFmpeg to prove the path. If video fails, confirm Options, Extras still points at ffmpeg.exe, then try a newer FFmpeg 7 build. Issues: ScreenToGif issues. Wiki: ScreenToGif wiki. License: MS-PL. Product home: screentogif.com.

Webcam: webcam guide. Resize: gif resizer. Convert: gif converter. Make: make a gif. ShareX and LICEcap do not replace this FFmpeg extras path: vs ShareX, vs LICEcap. This computer: gif maker for this computer. About: about. Home: gif maker.

FFmpeg steps:

  1. Run the official winget command or take the x64 setup MSI from GitHub Releases.
  2. Download a current FFmpeg Windows build from a recognized FFmpeg source and keep ffmpeg.exe in a folder you control.
  3. Open Options, Extras in ScreenToGif and select that ffmpeg.exe, targeting FFmpeg 7 and newer.
  4. Record a short clip, export as video with the FFmpeg encoder, and confirm the file plays.

Runtime, extras, and extra copies

Install ScreenToGif from GitHub or winget before you chase FFmpeg. The README requires .NET 9 Desktop Runtime or above. Full setup MSI bundles it. Light files do not. Safe download: download a gif maker safely. Windows: gif maker on Windows.

FFmpeg is not a second installer from Softonic. It is an extra binary ScreenToGif can download. Gifski is a separate extra for GIF encoding when the app offers it. Do not drop random DLLs into a Light portable folder and call that a plugin.

If video export broke after an FFmpeg upgrade, clear the stored path and download again from the app. Tracker threads describe that sequence. They do not ask you to paste a new encoder string.

Webcam and sketchboard recordings use the same export list as screen recordings. Import a phone clip the same way: copy the file to Windows, import, edit, export gif or APNG. There is no Android install path.

Keep one official ScreenToGif copy. Extra Desktop exes do not fix FFmpeg. Uninstall extra copies from Settings > Apps. Source: gif maker on GitHub. Releases: gif maker releases.

Xbox Game Bar and Clipchamp write video. That is still an import job. ShareX GIF recording does not replace FFmpeg inside ScreenToGif. LICEcap writes GIF or LCF and does not grow this video path. Kap is macOS only.

Microsoft Store product id 9N3SQK8PDS8G is a supporting README path. Chocolatey is listed; no invented choco command. Issues: NickeManarin/ScreenToGif issues. Wiki: ScreenToGif wiki. License: LICENSE.txt. Capture: make a gif. More notes: guides.

Frequently asked questions

Does this gif maker need FFmpeg?

Not for a basic gif or apng export. Video export and video import use FFmpeg. Current notes mention FFmpeg 7 and newer. Point the app at ffmpeg.exe under Options, Extras. Related: export gif, apng, video.

Where do I get FFmpeg for this gif maker?

Use an official FFmpeg Windows build and take ffmpeg.exe. The ScreenToGif wiki video FAQ is marked outdated on old host names. Stay on recognized FFmpeg builds, then select that exe in Options, Extras.

Can this gif maker import a video with FFmpeg?

Yes. Current release notes mention exporting and importing videos with FFmpeg 7 and newer. Copy the file to the PC first. Phone recordings belong on the Windows disk, not in a fake phone app. Webcam: webcam guide.

Can I export a gif without FFmpeg?

Yes. README names gif and apng as save formats. FFmpeg is the encoder path for more video types such as MP4 and WebM. A system AVI path also exists in older wiki notes. Prefer FFmpeg for modern video.

How do I install the gif maker before FFmpeg?

Run winget install -e --id NickeManarin.ScreenToGif or take the x64 setup MSI from GitHub Releases, then add FFmpeg from inside the app. Install notes: install on Windows and how to install winget.
